Meet the team

Built by people who lived it.

New Freedom Village is led by people in long-term recovery who have spent decades carrying the message — in meetings, in jails, in treatment centers, and one-on-one with the next person who walks in the door.

Sober since September 28, 1997

Addiction is a generational disease, and it found me. I tried rehab after rehab and nothing worked — until September 28, 1997. I have been sober ever since.

Twenty-eight years of recovery have been spent in continuous service: inside rehabs, halfway houses, jails, and the broader recovery community. I know clearly what works and what does not, and New Freedom Village is the program I wish had existed for me.

From September 1998 to July 2010, I served at A.R.C. as a halfway house counselor for women struggling with addiction — nearly twelve years walking alongside women in the most fragile months of their recovery.

From July 2016 to July 2019, I founded and ran Sarah's Second Chance — an on-site job training center built to tackle generational unemployment by teaching real job skills in the retail and online industries. The work was nominated for a Jefferson Award for public service.

In July 2023, I was invited to Washington, D.C. to sit on the United States Senate's Small Business panel, representing small-business voices on the work of rebuilding lives and local economies.

In September 2024, I was honored at the White House with the Business Leadership Award, issued by the Biden/Harris Administration in recognition of this work.

I have also served on the board of Focus on Renewal, a nonprofit serving the homeless and operating food banks in the community.

I have served on the board of SITE NITE, a nonprofit focused on expanding spiritual awareness in the community.

Outside of my recovery and volunteer work, I built and ran my professional career as the owner-operator of a multi-location retail and wholesale import business, with outlets across West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and South Carolina.

5 years sober

Paul came up on the streets of New York and spent 35 years as an electrician and craftsman, with deep expertise in house flips and full-scale remodeling. That trade is part of what makes New Freedom Village possible — he can build, fix, and maintain the houses we put people into.

Recovery clicked for Paul when he found sober theater. Participating and then leading on stage showed him that staying sober wasn't just possible — it could be alive, creative, and fun. Today he writes and performs rap music aimed at young people, carrying the message that sober living is something worth wanting.

Paul volunteers bringing the 12-step program into Palmer Pre-Release Center, working with men who are days or weeks away from walking back into the same neighborhoods that took them down the first time. He knows that population because he was that population.
